Iquitos
The city of Iquitos, Peru, is where you will fly into. A city of around 500,000 people, it is full of excitement and flavor. Jorge spends approximately half of his time in Iquitos and when there, enjoys time with his family, loads up on supplies for his ministry, and is an involved member of Remanente de Dios church. As a missionary, there are various opportunities in which you can participate. You can volunteer at the church with the pastor and the children, become involved with the homeless and needy, take Spanish lessons, and even help out at a medical clinic. These will all be part-time opportunities, of course, as most of your time spent in Peru will be in the jungle. We at Aventuras Misioneras, however, are willing to hear your desires and are very flexible with our schedules so just let us know what you would like to do and we can make it happen! |
Travel
We obviously must travel from village to village within the jungle on boat. We utilize various large vessels like barges to travel down the Amazon River from Iquitos and smaller, more mobile boats to navigate the side rivers and run-offs. All modes of travel are directed by experienced travelers and know the rivers well. We have two bases for our ministry, one in Iquitos, Peru, and one in Nuevo San Juan, located in the heart of the jungle.
Once arriving in Nuevo San Juan, trips further into the jungle are organized and planned. These trips require an adventurous heart and ambitious spirit. Some journeys take as long as 8 hours on small canoes to get to the most remote locations. |
Ministry
After traveling, some of our group may evangelize from house to house and others can fellowship with the natives through various activities. These activities include playing soccer and volleyball with the villagers, cooking, arts and crafts, and many construction projects. The construction projects consist of building and painting churches, worship areas, and anything else desired by the tribes. Much of our ministry involves work with the village's children as well. It is always amazing to see how there is hardly a language barrier between our missionaries and the kids. Simply having a desire to reach these young hearts always provides great experiences and blessings. When we travel to villages that already have a church planted, we will have a evening church service for the village to encourage and mentor the people. Often direction and healing occurs and the Holy Spirit becomes reinstilled in all of us. |
